Wolfgang von Goethe's Fable, Reineke Fuchs, 1846

A large antique folio edition of "Reineke Fuchs" by Wolfgang von Goethe. German language. Heavily illustrated. Copyright 1846. The book contains many detailed black and white illustrations throughout. The cover is marbled with a red leather wrapped backstrip, ribbing and gilt decoration. The cover corners are leather wrapped. There is a large water spot near the upper left cover corner. There is some light rubbing and discoloration on the cover marbling. The cover and backstrip connection leather as well as the backstrip leather is rubbed. The endpapers when opened are brightly marbled like the cover and good without stickers. There is a clip in the leather at the back cover / backstrip connection and on the lower left corner. There is very heavy large foxing from the blank pre-title pages through the title page. The dark medium to large foxing spots continue throughout the book. The outer edge of the pages are gilded. Size: 13.5 x 11 x 1.5". Reineke Fuchs is the a narrative poem of a cunning fox from the late 18th century. The fox is involved in various conflicts with other animals. The work explores themes of deceit and justice, the nature of morality and survival in this animal kingdom. (reference: gutenberg.org)
